New Center Zoning Ordinance
Carlisle/Wortman Associates will evaluate the current zoning ordinance regulations for the New Center District of Detroit, as part of the New Center Council, Inc. evaluation of district improvements. The New Center Area is located about three miles north of downtown Detroit, centered west of the Woodward Avenue/Grand Boulevard Intersection. It developed in the 1920s as a business center, and includes two National Historic Landmarks, Cadillac Place and the Fisher Building. Cadillac Place housed the former General Motors world headquarters (1923-1996), which is now located in the Renaissance Center downtown. Fisher Body (now a part of General Motors) was headquartered in the Fisher Building, now home to Detroit Public Schools. New Center is also the site of notable Detroit landmarks such as the St. Regis Hotel, the Henry Ford Medical Center campus, and the Motown Historical Museum. In addition to evaluating the current zoning of the area, CWA will recommend amendments to the zoning ordinance to make it more conducive to entertainment along Second Avenue and the general vicinity. As a part of this process, CWA will address provisions for incorporating Transit Oriented Design (TOD) regulations for the Woodward Avenue frontage. For more information, contact Dave Scurto.
